How Members of a Cargo Ship’s Crew Can Keep Their Hearts Healthy
Mar 03, 2017
Whenever authorities at a marine catering company work with experts in victualling management, in order to ensure delivery of healthful foods to all the catered vessels, each such authority hopes to maintain the heart health of the cargo vessels’ crew members. Crew members with healthy hearts display the characteristics of a physically fit individual. Yet a maritime catering company must pay attention to more than just the food on board ships, if it wants to ensure the heart health of every crew member in each catered vessel.
How physical fitness is linked to lifestyle
A physician deems a man fit when he responds to routine demands well, while retaining enough reserve energy to cope with unexpected challenges. At the same time, he must protect himself from potential health problems, such as disorders of the cardiovascular system. One reason that members of a cargo ship’s crew tend to stay fit relates to each man’s lifestyle.
While at sea, each of those same men engages in a good deal of activity. Any man that has adopted such a lifestyle has managed to improve his health. The improvement in his health stems from the same man’s ability to decrease his chances for developing some type of heart disease.
Of course, a cargo ship does not remain at sea forever. Each such vessel must dock at a port on a regular basis. By the same token, the crew members enjoy periods of time when their list of responsibilities does not include the performance of on board duties.
Still, every human body attains to an optimal level of fitness when it has benefited from the performance of 30 minutes of activity each day. In other words, if a seafarer on land wants to stay fit, then he must find a way to substitute for the activities that he performs while at sea. During such intervals, he should schedule time for aerobic exercises such as walking, jogging, attending an exercise class, or participating in some other heart-strengthening activity.
What to do when a man’s heart fails to perform as expected
If all crew members on a cargo ship stay fit, then, hopefully, authorities in charge of ship management will have little reason to worry about any employee having a heart attack. On the other hand, even the finest of catering services for the marine industry cannot guarantee freedom from worries about the chances for such an emergency. So, what should the healthy crew members do in such a situation?
If one crew member has complained about chest discomfort that lasts for two or more minutes, then those that are working with him must take prompt action. One of them should call for emergency help. Meanwhile, those individuals trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) ought to step forward and put their training to use.
